How the business carbon footprint calculator works
The Climeaction Carbon Calculator is a free business carbon footprint calculator that runs in your browser. It is one of Climeaction’s carbon intelligence tools, alongside ESGo for supplier ESG surveys and Scope 3 emissions tracking for supply chains. It turns the energy figures on your bills into an estimate of your annual emissions in tonnes of CO2e.
What goes in
Choose your region: Ireland, the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States or rest of world. Then pick one of seven sectors, including manufacturing, food and beverage, and life sciences. Enter your annual electricity use in kWh, your building and factory fuel (natural gas, oil or LPG) and your vehicle fuel. Leave blank anything that does not apply.
What comes out
The calculator applies region-specific emission factors, updated annually, and shows your Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions on screen. It adds an indicative Scope 3 figure based on typical ratios for your sector, and a per-employee benchmark against businesses of a similar size. It also highlights the two or three areas where reductions are usually cheapest to achieve. A one-page summary is emailed to you, ready to share with your board, your bank or your customers.
Where the estimate stops
The result is a screening estimate, not a full carbon footprint to the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064. Scope 3 in particular is estimated from sector ratios rather than measured. Frequently asked questions
It is a high level screening estimate. Scope 1 and 2 are calculated from your energy bills using internationally recognised, region-specific emission factors, and give a reliable picture of your operational emissions. Scope 3 is an indicative estimate based on typical ratios for your sector. It is not a substitute for a full carbon footprint assessment to GHG Protocol or ISO 14064 standards.
Scope 1 covers fuels your business burns directly, such as building and factory fuel and company vehicles. Scope 2 covers the electricity you purchase. Scope 3 covers indirect emissions such as your supply chain, commuting and waste. The calculator estimates Scope 3 from typical sector ratios; a full assessment measures it directly.
