Challenges

The Challenges We Solve

Food, dairy and beverage producers carry some of the most energy-intensive processes in industry, alongside complex supply chains and growing scrutiny from retailers and consumers.

Solutions

How We Help

We find the savings hiding in thermal systems and refrigeration,
then build phased roadmaps that fund themselves through savings, grants and rebates.

CASE STUDY 01

Long Established Irish Bakery

A long established Irish bakery engaged Climeaction to deliver a comprehensive, multi-year sustainability and decarbonisation programme covering carbon, energy and ESG.
2,607 tCO2e
savings identified
1,445,700 kWh
savings identified through ISO 50001

The Challenge

With a large, complex value chain, the client needed clarity on their full Scope 1, 2 and 3 impacts and a clear reduction strategy that could evolve year on year.

The Solution

Annual carbon footprint assessments and a full Scope 3 and ESG strategy through the FAST framework.

A climate action roadmap identifying 2,607 tCO2e of potential savings across Scopes 1, 2 and 3.
ISO 50001 Energy Management System established in 2024, managed by Climeaction.

B Corp readiness, community and employee engagement plans, and sustainable procurement programme.

CASE STUDY 02

Food Manufacturer

A globally recognized food manufacturer partnered with Climeaction through a strategic CAaaS programme to optimise energy use and recover waste heat across its operations.
4.3GWh
measured & verified savings
€250k+h
EEOS rebates earned

The Challenge

The site runs large proofing and baking ovens, a major frozen warehouse refrigeration system, HVAC and general plant heating. Despite investment in metering, there was no clear structure to hit energy reduction targets or identify the next major projects.

The Solution

FAST programme followed by CAaaS, starting with refrigeration optimisation and improved chiller setpoints.

Reduced natural gas demand in loading bay dehumidification through setpoint challenges and separation technologies.

LPHW heat pump installed to capture refrigeration return heat for existing heating and hot water systems.

Upgraded energy management data processing; compressed air, solar PPA and district heating investigations.

CASE STUDY 01

Beverage Manufacturer

A leading global food and beverage company engaged Climeaction to support regulatory compliance and the next phase of decarbonisation across its multi-site Ireland campus.
51%
electricity from new Solar PV
11GWh
fuel use electrified

The Challenge

Conventional quick wins were already exhausted after years of boiler optimisation, equipment upgrades and process improvements.

Further reductions demanded a deeper engineering-led approach: compressed air optimisation and electrification of low temperature heat for AHUs, CIP systems and production processes.

The Solution

Full SI 426 compliant FAST Climate Action Strategy with detailed Scope 1 and 2 analysis across the campus.

24 low and no cost measures across compressed air, wastewater treatment, pumps and motors: an additional 8% campus-wide energy reduction.

Waste heat recovery from new compressors and chillers feeding HVAC and CIP.

Seven major capital projects electrifying low temperature heat, replacing over 11 GWh of annual fuel use.

New solar PV to supply over 51% of one facility’s electricity; dedicated Energy Manager under CAaaS

CASE STUDY 02

Dairy Processor

A leading independent dairy processor set out to achieve Net Zero (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030 while balancing growth, production efficiency and quality.
4.3GWh
measured & verified savings
€250k+h
EEOS rebates earned

The Challenge

High thermal demand from steam and hot water across pasteurisation, drying, refrigeration, water treatment and CIP, with ageing utility infrastructure, outdated controls and the need for phased capital investment.

The client needed a roadmap delivering immediate savings while embedding operational excellence.

The Solution

Phase 1: BMS and control upgrades, steam system optimisation, boiler burner and O2 control, compressed air, EEOS funding and Origin Green support.
Phase 2: redesigned CIP recipes, chilled water sequencing, economiser retrofits and insulation upgrades.

Phase 3: boiler descaling, feedwater treatment, high-efficiency ammonia compressors with VSDs, water reuse.

Phases 4 to 5 (to 2030): ISO 50001, 46001 and 14001, industrial heat pumps, large-scale solar PV and expanded digital metering.

FAQs

Your questions, answered.

  • Where do the savings usually sit in a food or beverage plant?
Thermal demand is normally the largest opportunity: steam and hot water across pasteurization, clean in place and process heating, together with refrigeration. Heat recovery, heat pumps and better controls are where most of the measured savings come from.
  • Can you help us earn EEOS rebates?
Yes. One independent dairy processor earned more than €250,000 in EEOS rebates alongside 4.3 GWh of measured and verified savings.
  • How do we get Scope 3 data back from farms?
Through data captured at farm level rather than supplier surveys. The assessment runs offline and syncs when a connection is available, so the data comes from the farm gate itself and can stand up to external assurance.
  • How long before we have a plan?
Our FAST program covers Footprint, Audit, Strategy and Target setting as one structured piece of work, typically over 6 to 8 weeks, ending with a baseline, a costed opportunity register and a prioritized roadmap.
